FALLING ACORNS, MIGHTY OAKS

App Review: Kodable

The first week back from winter break is coming to a close. In order to ease back into the week, we started using a new app in the library. 1st-5th grade students started using Kodable this week. I will get kindergarten on the Kodable train later… I knew I wouldn’t have the energy to help them get signed in and situated this week. It’s rough having the littlest friends at the end of the day.

I strongly recommend that you check out Kodable with your classes. We love codeSpark, but Kodable has been new and exciting for the moment. The thing that really appealed to me was seeing that my beginner readers and ELL students were able to use it. While there is some text in the program, the students were able to grasp it without the text. For my older students, it is a good introduction to more text-based programming.

A screenshot from the Kodable webpage gets you a feel for how the app works, the objectives, and how cute the little characters are.

Overall, the kids are happy and I’m happy that I am able to monitor their progress through the website. I also like the lesson plans and teacher resources that Kodable has, including answer keys. I’ll admit that I am not an expert, so having something to fall back on if I can’t figure it out is really helpful.
