FALLING ACORNS, MIGHTY OAKS

Taking a minute

I can’t remember what the last post I wrote was even about. I’m sitting at my desk in my office and I’m getting ready for the day. I get to school early and I like to have my breakfast while I am getting situated. I wanted to “take a minute” to recap the first few weeks of school.

I had all of my iPads rolled out a week ago, which is pretty impressive with having 600 some iPads to issue to kiddos. We are still getting things situated with software, getting signed into this app, that app, etc. I’m really glad that we are figuring things out though. I’m looking forward to using some of the apps that we have.

I have also had quite the haul this school year thus far. I have won quite a few things this year. The most notable award came in yesterday. Last year I applied for the Dollar General Literacy Grant. We were awarded $3,000 to support ELL literacy. I’m looking forward to supporting my ELL students and seeing their faces when we get some new books and other materials that will really appeal to them. We need diverse books and I’m hoping to snag a few more bilingual titles.

I’m not on board with separating my library by genre, but I do want to pull out my Spanish language books and books that appeal to Hispanic cultures to make them easier for our students to find (and to prevent someone from checking out The Lorax in Spanish when no-one in there home speaks Spanish…).

Today is picture day, which I am thankful I remembered. I have on a halfway decent outfit and I’m hoping that my picture turns out okay… especially since my mom is one of those people who wants to keep them. She still never did that photo wall with my pictures from K-12… maybe one day she’ll knock that out and then add in some “teacher pictures”.

Lately I have been obsessed with “teacher Youtube”. There are so many good vloggers out there and I love this time of year because I have gotten to watch all of the classroom setup blogs. I’ve also enjoyed the tours and the classroom management strategies that people have shared. I really need to get on the library Youtube train. There’s not so much there, so I might be entering an untapped market.

One of the things that I got set up this week was our Stikbot castle for stop animation projects. I made a nice little video to test it out. I’m looking forward to my students making their first project.
